Immigration plans for an independent Scotland need an extra 14,000 people
Alex Salmond’s plans to shore up an independent Scotland’s economy by attracting more immigrants were thrown into chaos yesterday by new figures showing that he needs an extra 14,000 people to meet his target.
The first minister has said that he wants to attract 24,000 immigrants a year to boost tax revenues up to 2030. He had claimed that average net migration is currently at 22,000, meaning that only an additional 2,000 people would be required.
